Terraria and Minecraft: two games that on the surface are very similar, but have some key differences in gameplay and style.
Many people when they first see Terraria they see a 2D game with a building mechanic and with a more blocky style, so they assume it's just Minecraft if it were 2D but they couldn’t be any more wrong.
Let's get the similarities out of the way, The building mechanics are quite similar you use blocks to build things and people use this to build amazing structures and pieces of art. The style of the building is decently similar to Minecraft, but outside of that the similarities end there.
The biggest difference between the games is the intent of the game. Minecraft is built around you building amazing structures and the combat against the AI takes a backseat, Terraria on the other hand the building takes a backseat to the combat. In Minecraft the combat is simple you get six levels to each tool and the only viable melee weapons are axes, swords, and a trident. In contrast Terraria has swords, axes, spears, flails, boomerangs, and even yoyos for some reason totaling up to 180 different melee weapons alone. Terraria also has 90 different ranged weapons, ranging from a simple bow made of copper to a cannon that shoots stars. Minecraft has only a bow and crossbow for ranged attacks. Terraria has four major styles to play when it comes to combat where as minecraft there is one major style. In Minecraft you have two bosses you can fight for a challenge and a raid you can do. In Terraria you have seventeen non-event based bosses, fourteen event bosses, and four different raids you can do. When it comes to building in contrast you can’t beat Minecraft. Terraria does have more total blocks to decorate with but Minecraft has the edge in style to most people.
I highly recommend playing both games. Minecraft is an amazing game with so many hours of content and so many possibilities as long as you are creative. Terraria is just as amazing but I would recommend to play this if you want to do more combat then building.
