The Greenfield High School volleyball team is a team with a lot of spirit and tenacity. According to coach Lisa Moore, the team had a losing record last year, however, there is a lot of talent and students ready for the upcoming season. “GHS Volleyball finished with a 6-9 record last season, defeating local opponents Mohawk(2), Pioneer(2), Franklin Tech (1) and Athol (1). We lost four seniors to graduation and two varsity players to moving away. This year will be very different because we will be playing only Franklin County schools, which will include multiple state champions, Frontier. We feel very fortunate to have practice time this fall which gives the team a chance to come together and improve their skills. Seniors Morgan Bardwell, Korynne Callahan, Gianna Conte, and Cassie Mattei are providing strong leadership and enthusiasm to a wonderful group of student athletes,” said Coach Moore.

I was able to get in touch with two of the team’s captains. They are eager to begin the volleyball season. Korynne said, “I think practice so far has been really fun, and it's been good getting to know all of you. We don't know when the first game is or if there will be one. I still feel good though because I get to have my senior season with my captains, meet a lot of new people, and get to know y'all!” Cassie said, “I think practice so far has been good. The changes with masks haven't been awful, but not the best. The first games start in February, not sure when exactly.”

Due to Covid-19 and CDC guidelines, volleyball has changed a bit. First, the season was delayed. The season will now be from Feb.26 through April 26. Also, practices are now held at the Greenfield Swimming Pool. Coach Moore says, “I wanted you to know how practice goes because of all the covid rules. When you arrive at the pool (which is really just a wide part of the river) you will see us by the sand volleyball court. My assistant coach Kara has to ask you a bunch of questions (how are you feeling, have you been exposed to anyone with covid, etc) and take your temperature (just one of those forehead ones)- we have to do this every practice. We also must practice in pods (no more than 10 in a group and the same group every practice). Which brings me to ask, have you played before or are you new to volleyball? I would like to put you in a group where you will be comfortable. Sorry to be telling you so much stuff, but it's important to know.” Due to the pandemic the certainty of the volleyball season starting in February is truly unknown, for now we just have to hope for the best and enjoy the time we have as a team, so until then put your left hand in 1 , 2, 3, GREENWAVE!!
