Remote learning during the pandemic is unprecedented, as both students and teachers are stuck at their computers throughout the year in order to remain safe. Many do not only miss the in-person interactions, but the pep rallies and class competitions as well. While these events cannot happen face-to-face, the Greenfield Student Council (of which I am a member of) is constructing a friendly competition between the grades. The “Class Cup” is focused on forming a sense of community throughout the school during these isolating times.

"The competitions will be weekly and smaller in size," said Angela Mass, the GHS Student Council Advisor in an interview on October 2nd. There will also be larger contests that mirror Bleacher Wars and lip-sync competitions of the past. Spirit Week will also play a major role in the Class Cup, as well. With these competitions, points are awarded to the grades based on an “average-basis and participation” in each class. The points are added together by the end of the year for each grade, forming a winner of the Class Cup. According to Mass, a trophy will be awarded to the victors of this year, and then inherited by the winners of the following years. “Not only this, but a celebration will occur at the end of the year if it is safe to do so,” adds Mass.

Some contests being considered are pumpkin carving, face mask design, and most spirited class. These events will be voluntary for students, and are introduced during their advisory. Mass also states that a subcommittee is being formed specifically for students to plan the Class Cup. If you have any ideas for a contest, please contact her. The first competition of the Class Cup already commenced the week of October 5th with a staff-oriented two truths and a lie. This will hopefully start a tradition at GHS that can continue throughout the years.
