A Plan for Basketball

Sports continue to confuse everyone, even the coaches. For now, Greenfield Basketball is set to play 8 games, and if they stay winning go into Franklin County playoffs.

Both boys and girls will only play in Franklin County, so GHS will play Mahar, Franklin County Tech, Pioneer Regional, Mohawk Trail Regional, Athol, Hopkins Academy, and Turners. Most of these teams are in a different league so the boys and girls aren’t going into the season expecting anything.

“Right now games are slated to start 1/21 and we will play a regular season schedule on Tuesdays and Thursdays,” Coach John Hockey of the girls team wrote in an email. “Playoffs'' if teams stay winning, could end up lasting 3 games making the total number of games 11. If the team wins all of their games they will be set at the number one seed, but even if they don’t they wil be set in some type of bracket to keep playing, they can make it to the finals by winning more and more. No matter how many games you win or lose you will be put in “playoffs.”

The rules will certainly be challenging to get used to, but players are staying optimistic. Senior captain Katie Haselton is keeping everyone's hopes up and keeping the girls active, having captains practices a few times a week, even outside due to Covid. The girls are expecting a lot coming off a successful, but somewhat disappointing season; they want to win. They boys feel the same way, they had their successes but their season was cut shorter than they had wanted last year after losing to Mount Greylock in the first round of playoffs. Both teams being in a similar situation are thirsting for success this year, even with the season being shorter than usual.

This is certainly a new way of playing and the rules will be a little challenging to get used to, but at least the athletes will be on the court again. Once again everything is still up in the air so don’t hold your breath and stay tuned!
