A Day at Guided Learning at the YMCA

This school year, the YMCA in Greenfield has been supporting students learning remotely with Guided Learning. The Y hosts students daily to attend remote classes with adult supervision and support. Here’s what a typical day looks like for students, like me, in the Guided Learning program.

To start the day, I come in through the back, to stay away from people, and then they have to check my temperature. Then we go to a room and start our work just like other students in remote learning.

There are about 50 kids here. We are all separated by age group and each have our own staff member. Everyone is supposed to stay socially distant. One of the staff members, Kaylie Anderson said that, “it feels good to get back in the routine of working in person again.”

“It’s good for the kids to have an opportunity to get extra help from people when they might not have it at home or wherever they are,” said Billy Woodall, a 10th grader at GHS who attends the Y’s Guided Learning program.

Most of the kids and the teachers say that it's better, and that since we are all together it's easier to do work. Personally, I feel like I can get more work done here more than I do at home. When we finish our work, we get to go to the gym or the gymnastics room to move around.

It's interesting to hear the kids on the chromebook doing work. I definitely get more help here than anywhere else. It's nice to have help doing work and some kids need more help more than others. It's nice to see my friends and chill with them and being here is different and gets me more help. I haven't been here for long but from attending here, school is getting better. I like that the staff is here to help me do work and I feel better here doing work then my house. That's why going to the YMCA for school is good for me during the pandemic.
